Getting ready for round 2, Starting with Africa

 Whaddup fam!?


So I came back to Toronto, Canada to catch up with family/friends, and work 2 intense weeks in London Ontario which was busy but really fun. I love working with fellows, residents and seeing old colleagues. Weather hasn't been too bad but cold and I will be happy to escape it shortly :P

Unfortunately, I did have my car broken into (smashed a window), they stole a bag that contained my laptop. Tough times these days for police but after daily phone calls, they agreed to come with me to scope it out, the criminal did discover the Air tag in my bag and tossed it right around St. Felix homeless shelter (which is closed for now). I suspect the greenP parking where this occurred (10 soho st) has video footage of it and police are investigating but doesn't seem like a high priority at all and so I have parted ways :(

However, I am going to Uganda this Saturday for a tropical medicine course and really excited. Seems we have a really enthusiastic group of doctors from all sorts of places. After I will be going to Dubai, and eventually to Thailand where I plan to do an intense bootcamp  (BeFitreat Thailand | Fitness, Weight Loss & Wellness Retreats). 


After I will go to Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan and Japan. I plan to do at least 2 weeks of surf camp in Bali kimasurf.com - so far this seems to be one of the best spots. I just need to decide If I go in March before Japan, or in April after Japan. 

I am meeting two friends, maybe three in Japan for 2.5 to 3 weeks of eating and adventures in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe. I've been using Japanesepod101 and so much of my Japanese from 15 years ago has been coming back a lot faster than I would have expected.

My tentative plan is :

Jan 13th to 26th Uganda

Jan 27th to Jan 31st - Dubai

Feb 1st to ?   - Uzbekistan, or Pakistan or something else

Feb 11th to Feb 24th - Phuket, Thailand

Feb 25th to March 3rd - Malaysia and Singapore

March 3th - Maye Bali for two weeks or Philippines and Taiwan.

Done my 8 weeks time to travel in Taiwan!

Well, I've finished up 8 weeks of intensive Mandarin. My classes were 1 on 1 except 1 week of group classes. I studied a ton and went to a lot of language exchanges. I still need to keep the momentum, as I feel I could easily start forgetting but I also feel I am just about at B1 level which is HSK3. Chat GPT would explain that this would usually take 18 months in University. One caveat being my reading ability is a bit behind as I focussed a more on speaking (using pingyin). I also feel I struggle a bit with listening, but this doesn't concern me too much I am just working on getting more input (podcasts and speaking with locals). The textbooks we and most schools use in Mandarin is from Taiwan Normal University. There are 4 levels, each with 3 books - I am starting level 3! Week one of Mandarin done

 Today is Friday April 26th, and I have finished my first week! It's been tough but my experience with learning Spanish and beginner Japanese has definitely been helpful. I actually find quite a few similarities between Mandarin and Japanese which makes the grammar a lot easier to accept. For example, the idea of something existing when wanting to ask someone if they carry or have it, i.e. instead of "do you guys have a washroom" they would say "does a washroom exist". I have been pretty sick the whole week other than today which did make things rough, waking up at strange hours, unable to sleep, coughing throughout class. However, I also had nothing to do but study which is good. My studying consists of: 1. vocab building, I have a great app (Pleco) which allows me to do flashcards in all sorts of fashion.  2. Kyoto, back to Tokyo and Japanese language school (and some missed pics).

So far my Japan trip has been going amazingly. With so much planning, I feel there was mainly only a few hiccups. I have felt as though I have explored so much, but still left so much to see or do. The trip definitely prioritized food and doing stuff. I am now at Coto Japanese school studying Japanese, I am beginner 1 level 3. I feel like we are able to have basic conversation but enough to make the class a fun and conversational. Teachers seem a bit limited with English but it also forces us to use more Japanese to ask questions. The school is beautiful with as much roasted tea as a I want, but the class size was up to 8 one day, but it seems people miss often, today we had 3 people... I am family with most of the grammar, but I am way behind on the Kanji. I have avoided learning this as I was worried it would slow down my speaking, but now the time has come.
